At our October HHAPC meeting, the members discussed the implementation plan for 2009, a community-wide campaign to reduce the underage drinking rate in Hermosa.
The HHAPC debated the use of an outside PR firm to help with the implementation of the campaign. Although members would prefer that the campaign be run "en casa," it may be difficult to produce campaign messages and materials without the help of a professional. It was suggested that the HHAPC contact an individual at the Chicago Department of Public Health who worked with the City's anti-smoking campaign. In addition, a member from Metropolitan Family Services volunteered to contact the Illinois Institute of Art to see if students might be available to design materials for the campaign. HHAPC members also signed up to work in various areas of the campaign, such as Materials Distribution, Campaign Presentations, etc.
Currently, we have not had much luck recruiting assistance from city agencies and the university. Therefore, the SPF Coordinator is still entertaining proposals for PR firms that will work directly with the HHAPC and Hermosa youth to develop campaign materials. It is our hope that the materials can be produced over the winter break, and distribution can begin in January. Campaign Presentations, which would include an anti-drinking drama performed by our youth, will hopefully begin in February and March at our local schools and community-based organizations. Those dates will be forthcoming.
We will continue to keep you informed as to the status of the campaign, and how we can use our help. Thank you for all your suggestions and enthusiasm so far!
We hope to see you at our next meeting on December 11th. We will be having a pot-luck holiday celebration and fellowship, and we will reflect on all of the accomplishments we've had in 2008!
Healthy Hermosa is a coalition made up of community residents, local service providers, agencies, organizations, businesses, and others interested in the health of the Hermosa Community, located in the City of Chicago, Illinois.

Healthy Mind Healthy Body Healthy Communities:
October’s CPR Trainings
The American Heart Association and Chicago Department of Public Health received a Chicago Community Trust grant to increase the public’s ability to administer basic CPR. This CPR Anytime project was carried out by the Healthy Communities Initiative: Healthy Southeast Chicago, Healthy Chicago Lawn, Healthy Hermosa, and Healthy Albany Park. The goal of this partnership was for each health coalition to train 300 community members in CPR Anytime, a scaled-down version of the extended CPR certification training. The trainings were held in October, and the healthy Communities reached their goal of training 1200 community members. The trainings are meant to be taught easily to large numbers of people, who are in turn, are asked to train at least two other individuals. Training sites and audiences varied from the very young to senior citizens. Partners included Bowen High School, Jane Addams Grammar School and the CDPH South Chicago Clinic in Southeast Chicago, Holy Cross Hospital and Marquette School in Chicago Lawn, the Miracle Center, North Grand High School and the 25th District Police Station in Hermosa, and the 17th Police District, Aspira-Haugan Middle School, and Swedish Covenant Hospital in Albany Park.

Thank you to everyone that helped make these trainings possible and to all the participants!

Summer Vacation is Over and We're Ready for Fall!
Well, it's the first day of Fall, but I will say that the HHAPC had a very productive summer. Over the last few months, we successfully:
*finalized our Strategic Planning document
*worked with our summer youth to put together the steps we need to take in order to roll-out the Strategic Plan
*used the youth's roll-out steps in the development of an Implementation Plan, which we will use to guide our efforts in the 2008-2009 school year
*created a Community Profile booklet, which will be distributed in the month of October
*********************************************************************************
This Fall, we will focus our efforts on one of the strategies we identified in the Strategic Plan, a Social Norms Campaign. The Social Norms Campaign has three major components:
A - Marketing/Media Materials
B - Interactive Strategies such as Campaign Presentations and Contests
C - A Youth Pocket Guide
We hope to put together some committees of HHAPC members to help us make our campaign a success, using the Implementation Plan to guide our efforts.
We will also be reaching out to more youth who might be interested in either designing campaign materials, or testing and distributing campaign materials. So if you know of any youth that might be interested, please have the contact us.
Please join us for our next HHAPC meeting, where we will go over the details of the Implementation Plan and determine who would like to work on specific areas of the Campaign.
As soon as we have set a date for the next HHAPC meeting I will post that information here, however right now we are looking at the second week in October.
I hope you all had a wonderful summer and we look forward to seeing you at the next meeting.

Strategic Planning Meeting Results
Thank you again for your participation in our Strategic Planning Meeting last month. Based on the your votes from that meeting, three strategies were selected for implementation in Hermosa in 2008-2009:
*Alcohol-prevention workshops aimed at adults and children in the Hermosa community
*A social norms campaign, increasing concern around underage drinking and bringing awareness to alcohol-related laws and policies
*A youth pocket-guide that includes alcohol-prevention resources and healthy alternatives to alcohol
These strategies, along with the needs assessment data we used to select them (which we reviewed at our meeting), as well as the goals and objectives for the coming year are included in the abridged Strategic Planning document, which is posted on our Google Docs site. (To acces this site, see the archived posting from March titled "HHAPC Documents on Google Docs.") We encourage you to review the Strategic Plan before our next meeting, where we will discuss the Plan and develop an Action Plan and Timeline for implementing these strategies.
The tentative date for the Action Plan Meeting is Thursday, July 17th from 10:00am-12:00pm.
We will confirm this date as soon as possible. Thank you!

Pick a Date for the HHAPC Strategic Planning Meeting!
This past Wednesday, at the Healthy Hermosa Coalition Meeting, we had a brief overview of the preliminary results of the underage drinking Needs Assessment, and had a good discussion about what some of the major causes might be. Members also gave good ideas of how we might best combat these problems, including parent workshops, and a pocket-size guide for teens.
We will continue our discussion at our Strategic Planning Meeting in May. At this meeting, we will become more familiar with the intervening variables (or causes) of underage drinking in Hermosa: Retail Access, Social Access, Community Norms, and Promotion, as well as others. We will go over our findings for Hermosa in each of these areas, and compare them to the State of Illinois' data.
Finally, we will vote on what we feel is the most immediate cause of underage drinking in Hermosa, and come up with strategies we want to implement in the 2008-2009 school year.
Right now, we are trying to find a meeting time that will accomodate the greatest number of people. If you wish to participate and you did not receive an email from the Meeting Wizard, please post a comment here and I will be sure to send it out to you.
Finally, we are also gearing up for the Healthy Hermosa Health & Resource Fair to be held on June 27, 2008 at the Gap Center. I will be posting a flyer to the blog once it is finalized.

Needs Assessment of Underage Drinking in Hermosa, Draft for Review
The 1st Draft of the Needs Assessment on Underage Drinking in Hermosa is now available for your review. It is posted at our Google Docs website. The instructions for how to access the site are in the March Archive. I can also email it to you, if you would like to post a comment here or email me.
The Assessment is currently in spreadsheet format, as required by the Illinois Department of Human Services. It is organized by "intervening variables," which are reasons why underage drinking may be occurring in Hermosa (e.g. Promotion of alcohol, Community Norms, etc.) Eventually, this spreadsheet will be reorgainzed into an easy-to-read handout or booklet that can be distributed to your agency and the community. We hope to have that available by early summer.
We will be discussing the Assessment at our Coalition Meeting this Wednesday. If you have any comments or questions, please feel free to post them here or to email me.
Thank you for all your help in gathering and providing the data that went into the Needs Assessment. This will be a truly great resource for Hermosa!

Although I had hoped to post documents, such as our Resource Assessment Survey, here to our website, it looks like it is not possible. And so I am going to be posting HHAPC documents to a website called Google Documents. This is how you can access the documents:
1. Whenever new documents are posted, you will receive an email from me with a link to the documents. Click on it!
2. This will take you to the google homepage. If you don't already have a username and password, you can create one.
3. Now you should be able to view the document!
4. Using the Google File Menu you can either PRINT the document OR
5. Using the Google File Menu you can SAVE to Word or to PDF
6. And if you click on Docs Home in the upper right hand corner, you can see and manage all the HHAPC documents
If you are having trouble viewing the documents, post a comment here or please email or call me. Hopefully this will be a useful tool for all of us, as you will be able to share YOUR documents with the rest of the committee as well. Perhaps I can also give a short demo at our next meeting. The details of that meeting will be forthcoming!

Feb 29 Meeting Summary
The HHAPC had a fantastic meeting at The Miracle Center on February 29th! We would like to welcome the following new members to the HHAPC:
Sylvia Campos, Grupo 24 Horas Chicago
Jorge Villa, Grupo 24 Horas Chicago
Felipe Luna, Grupo 24 Horas Chicago
Gill Criollo, Youth Service Project
Robin Schmidt, Healthcare Alternative Systems
The new members received an overview of the HHAPC and the SPF grant and explored ways to collaborate around alcohol-prevention in Hermosa. Agencies interviewed each other to gather information on the services they provide to the community.
In addition, the members have volunteered to call and interview alcohol-prevention and alcohol-treatment centers in the Hermosa area in order to compile an inventory of services in the community. This will greatly help with the resource assessment of Hermosa, which all HHAPC members will receive a copy of upon completion!
We will be emailing the interview form early this week. Please email, fax, or drop them off at The Miracle Center by Friday, March 14th.
Thanks again for your help!
Ilinois Youth Survey
This month and next, students from the Hermosa community will be taking the Illinois Youth Survey, which surveys young people regarding substance abuse.
Schools opt to take the survey on a strictly voluntary basis, and the identities of all students remain anonymous. Data for specific schools are available only to organizations given specific permission by the school. The survey results provide these organizations with invaluable information on the level and type of substance abuse prevalent among young people.
This year, the following Hermosa area schools will be taking the IYS:
North Grand High School
Ames Middle School
Nixon Elementary
McAuliffe Elementary
The HHAPC and The Miracle Center would like to thank these schools for opting to take the survey. This information will greatly help us in our mission to stop underage drinking in Hermosa!
Conducting the Needs Assessment
Since November 2007, the HHAPC has been collecting data related to alcohol-usage in the Hermosa community. This information will be compiled, analyzed, and distributed to the Healthy Hermosa Coalition to determine which strategies will be implemented in Fall 2008. Here is some of the information that is being collected that will be available to the community:
*Listing of liquor stores, supermarkets, and other retail-outlets selling alcohol.
*Listing of bars and their compliance with state regulations.
*Volume of advertisements in local newspapers, local television, and billboards catering to minors.
*Percentage of community residents reporting alcohol-usage as acceptable in the community.
*Percentage of community residents reporting youth having easy-access to alcohol.
*Number of alcohol-related arrests in the past year.
*Number of alcohol-related hospital admissions/discharges.
*Self-reported student alcohol-usage.
*Local alcohol policies and school alcohol policies.
The HHAPC would like to thank the following agencies for helping us to obtain this information:
The Miracle Center
The Latin American Chamber of Commerce
The Chicago Police Department
The Chicago Department of Epidemiology
The Illinois Liquor License Commission

Getting to Know the HHAPC and SPF!
Welcome to the HHAPC blog! If this is your first time to our site, this post will give you some background on the HHAPC and the SPF grant.
In July of 2007, The Miracle Center, a youth and family-serving agency in the Hermosa community, received a Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) grant that focuses on the reduction of underage drinking in the community. The funding comes from the US Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, or SAMHSA. It is administered through the Illinois Department of Human Services.
The SPF model relies on community coalitions to reduce substance abuse by implementing comprehensive, multi-strategy approaches, such as policy changes, media campaigns, and education programs. But before the coalition can implement strategies, there are some other important steps to carry out:
1. Community Assessment
2. Capacity Building
3. Planning
4. Implementation
5. Evaluation
The Healthy Hermosa Coalition has made SPF and the reduction of underage drinking one of its priorities, and as a result, formed a sub-committee, the HHAPC, to handle the day-to-day work involved. The HHAPC has been working for the past 6 months to build community capacity and conduct a community needs and resource assessment. There will be more information on our efforts so far and our plans for the year in the coming posts!
