This past Wednesday, at the Healthy Hermosa Coalition Meeting, we had a brief overview of the preliminary results of the underage drinking Needs Assessment, and had a good discussion about what some of the major causes might be. Members also gave good ideas of how we might best combat these problems, including parent workshops, and a pocket-size guide for teens.
We will continue our discussion at our Strategic Planning Meeting in May. At this meeting, we will become more familiar with the intervening variables (or causes) of underage drinking in Hermosa: Retail Access, Social Access, Community Norms, and Promotion, as well as others. We will go over our findings for Hermosa in each of these areas, and compare them to the State of Illinois' data.
Finally, we will vote on what we feel is the most immediate cause of underage drinking in Hermosa, and come up with strategies we want to implement in the 2008-2009 school year.
Right now, we are trying to find a meeting time that will accomodate the greatest number of people. If you wish to participate and you did not receive an email from the Meeting Wizard, please post a comment here and I will be sure to send it out to you.
Finally, we are also gearing up for the Healthy Hermosa Health & Resource Fair to be held on June 27, 2008 at the Gap Center. I will be posting a flyer to the blog once it is finalized.
