To Kill a Mockingbird--Performance

The Miracle Center invites you to a live performance of "To Kill A Mockingbird." For this educational student production, many teens in our arts program have assembled with some adult guest performers under the direction of our new Artistic Director, Diane Fisher-Simmons. The show's script, based on the Pulitzer prize winning book by Harper Lee, still reminds us today that racism and judgment without "walking around in someone else's skin" is as wrong today as it was in 1935, Maycomb, Alabama - which is the show's setting. Don't miss this childhood journey which leads us to a court room battle where standing for what is right, win or lose, still matters.

“To Heal the Heart: Responding to Family Violence in a Community of Faith” Conference

Being held at The Moody Church in Chicago titled “To Heal the Heart: Responding to Family Violence in a Community of Faith” occurring on October 7^th (8:30am-5:30pm) and 8^th (8:30am-12:30pm).

The conference will consist of a keynote presentation by Dr. Steven Tracy, who is the author of Mending the Soul: Understanding and Healing Abuse and a professor of Theology and Ethics at Phoenix Seminary in Phoenix, Arizona, and Celestia Tracy, M.A., L.P.C.. There will also be over 25 breakout sessions to choose from covering topics including: human trafficking, domestic violence, date rape, sexual addiction, orders of protection, and many more.

Attendees will include pastors, social ministry leaders, social workers, clinicians, students, and lay leaders. Early bird registration rates (before September 29, 2011) for the conference are $25 for general attendees and $15 for students. For an additional $10, up to 6.75 continuing education credits may be earned by LSW, LCSW, LPC, and LCPC. Hunger Walk 2011

Over 9,000 were in attendance at the Greater Chicago Food depository 26th annual Hunger Walk on 6/25/11. St Sylvester church in Logan Sq. sent a team of 26 to participate. It was a beautiful day to walk along the lake at Soldier Field. We were all very moved to see all the people, especially knowing we were part of the solution to stop hunger in Chicago, stated Dora Flores-Albert Advocate health care parish nurse at St. Sylvester and Healthy Hermosa coalition member.

Please Advertise Responsibly

If you walk between Pulaski Avenue and Cicero (Chicago), you will notice that a great amount of alcohol advertisements will entertain the sight of more than one person. But if you stop to observe which of them is dedicated to prevent alcohol drinking among the youth, you will be surprised because there isn't any!

For this reason, the youth from Hermosa in partnership with the Healthy Hermosa Coalition, The Miracle Center, and Boys and Girls club, united and participated in a rally to create awareness among the community residents and elected officials, of the urgent need to restrict alcohol advertisements in Hermosa.

The irresponsible way that some liquor companies flood the Latino community with their ads was a focus of this rally. These ads include catchy Spanish phrases, colors related to sport teams or flags and even young people drinking at the beach or parties. All this done with the intention of catching the attention of Latino Youth.

So with the slogan "Please Advertise Responsibly" it is our HOPE to call the attention of community residents, elected officials, and media and change the way alcohol industries approach and does business in Latino communities!

Youth Summit Inspires Hope

The event began with a talk by Dr. Gary Slutkin proposing a question to the youth in attendance. Where does violence come from? This led the overall activities as youth were able to engage in meaningful dialogue after skits were presented to show the youth the dangers of violence through the perspective of the victim.

The open dialogue brought about gang members and those at risk of gang violence, together in an effort to still the violence that has plagued our streets. A young girl, probably a fifth grader, stood in front of a crowded audience to give her story. Approached after school by two female gang members, she was robbed and threatened to represent a gang. Her oldest brother, who would often pick her up after school, was now dead from gun violence.

Though no answers were promised by the young men and women who planned and participated in this event, the youth were given the clear message that they are not alone. Communities, organizations, and mentors were available to help them make sense of the senseless and make choices that would not involve violence and gangs.

I tip my hat to Zale and his crew for an event that brought the realities of the streets to light and for instilling hope where there is little. Great Job!
