Pick a Date for the HHAPC Strategic Planning Meeting!

This past Wednesday, at the Healthy Hermosa Coalition Meeting, we had a brief overview of the preliminary results of the underage drinking Needs Assessment, and had a good discussion about what some of the major causes might be. Members also gave good ideas of how we might best combat these problems, including parent workshops, and a pocket-size guide for teens.

We will continue our discussion at our Strategic Planning Meeting in May. At this meeting, we will become more familiar with the intervening variables (or causes) of underage drinking in Hermosa: Retail Access, Social Access, Community Norms, and Promotion, as well as others. We will go over our findings for Hermosa in each of these areas, and compare them to the State of Illinois' data.

Finally, we will vote on what we feel is the most immediate cause of underage drinking in Hermosa, and come up with strategies we want to implement in the 2008-2009 school year.

Right now, we are trying to find a meeting time that will accomodate the greatest number of people. If you wish to participate and you did not receive an email from the Meeting Wizard, please post a comment here and I will be sure to send it out to you.

Finally, we are also gearing up for the Healthy Hermosa Health & Resource Fair to be held on June 27, 2008 at the Gap Center. I will be posting a flyer to the blog once it is finalized.

Needs Assessment of Underage Drinking in Hermosa, Draft for Review

The 1st Draft of the Needs Assessment on Underage Drinking in Hermosa is now available for your review. It is posted at our Google Docs website. The instructions for how to access the site are in the March Archive. I can also email it to you, if you would like to post a comment here or email me.

The Assessment is currently in spreadsheet format, as required by the Illinois Department of Human Services. It is organized by "intervening variables," which are reasons why underage drinking may be occurring in Hermosa (e.g. Promotion of alcohol, Community Norms, etc.) Eventually, this spreadsheet will be reorgainzed into an easy-to-read handout or booklet that can be distributed to your agency and the community. We hope to have that available by early summer.

We will be discussing the Assessment at our Coalition Meeting this Wednesday. If you have any comments or questions, please feel free to post them here or to email me.

Thank you for all your help in gathering and providing the data that went into the Needs Assessment. This will be a truly great resource for Hermosa!
